UEL Group requests an urgent debate on the need for a political solution to the crisis in Catalonia

Autumn session: UEL Group calls for an urgent debate about the crisis in Catalonia

The recent events clearly show there is need for a political solution to the crisis in Catalonia in order to avoid further citizens’ dissatisfaction with the current model of governance and the deepening of the crisis which should be resolved through political dialogue with full and unconditional respect for European values and democratic freedoms.

Therefore, Mr. Tiny Kox, Chairman of the UEL Group, has requested on behalf of the UEL Group an urgent debate “The need for a political solution to the crisis in Catalonia” to be held during the Autumn Session.

The request for this debate has been done in consultation with the delegation of the Spanish political party PODEMOS. Vice-Chairperson of the UEL Group, Andrej Hunko, has travelled to Catalonia to observe the situation and to attend today’s negotiations in Madrid between 12 political parties, including the Catalan government to explore ways out of the crisis through dialogue and cooperation. The collision between regional Catalonia and Spain itself is complex and can escalate in a short period of time. Therefore, there is an urgent need for discussions to be taking place on the international level.
