UEL Chair Tiny Kox, together with the chairs of the Group of the European People’s Party, the Socialists, Democrats and Greens Group, the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe and the Free Democrats Group at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, calls members of parliaments in Europe to demand from the Turkish authorities an immediate release of Mr Selahattin Demirtas, candidate in the presidential elections in Turkey on 24 June.
Mr Demirtas is since November 2016 in pre-trial detention and therefore not able to participate in these most important elections, which will be combined with parliamentary elections. An immediate release will at least give Mr Demirtas a chance to participate in the final days of the elections campaign.
