At an international conference in Copenhagen (19-20 November), UEL Chair Tiny Kox emphasized that European austerity policy is undermining social and democratic rights of European citizens. Referring to earlier reports of Council of Europe’s Human Rights Commissioner Nils Muižnieks and several resolutions on austerity adopted by the Parliamentary Assembly Mr Kox concluded that ‘alternatives to the Europe of austerity are not only desirable but even obligatory if we want to respect the human rights – obligations all Council of Europe member states have taken upon themselves.’
